It's an annual event - the committee of the Society of Women Writers Queensland, gathering at Marj Wilke's home at Hendra, to plan the year ahead. You'll have to check out the next issue of Ring of Brightwater to get all the goss, but here are a few snippets and photos to whet your appetite for the good news.

It rained, and rained, and we had to move into the dining room as we could not hear ourselves talk or think over the din of the rain on the roof - which Marj tells us, she climbed ladders to put the 'cladding' in place. Just like this amazing woman to do something like that!!

Two cars were parked on the back lawn - as there was scant space outside on the road, and it did save a long water in the rain. Despite some concerns, neither car was bogged, and managed to slosh back to the road.

Food was great - thanks to all for contributing.

The last meeting of the year is always a highlight at the Society of Women Writers - we get to hear the results of our annual Writing Competitions, and listen to the advice and report of the judge, on this occasion it was Sue Gough. Following that are some silly skits devised by the members, followed by lunch.

On this occasion too, we also shared the excitement with Ellen Ries of the launch of her book "Meanderings".

We were also treated to a wonderful Powerpoint presentation of some of the history of SWWQ.

Hi lovely ladies,
I didn't recognise myself chairing the AGM. Haven't dyed my hair in a while and as everyone says grey suits me am reconciling to the new face in the mirror. Have moved to Noosaville in to Laguna Retirement Estate which has been a great move and gives me community. Since my husband came out of hospital following a stroke we have been 'joined at the hip' and with friendly but not intrusive neighbours I can now go shopping without worrying. Next year I can plan whole day trips to Brisbane and have his lunch delivered.
It was a great Annual General Meeting re-electing Heather to the Chair and it was my privilege to thank her for her great leadership over the past two years and congratulate her on continuing. It was good to see new faces elected to the Committee and know that the Society is set for more good times ahead.
Ynes Sanz as always gave us good feedback on poetry entries. Pat on the back ladies we certainly have talent in our ranks. (I was chuffed to get a 'recommended'.)
Thanks to Di for keeping the Blog active. Bribie photos will be up shortly. Off today to the Sunshine Coast Authors Book Fair at Maroochydore. An escape not too far away. Be a great social time for me catching up with Heather and Judi in particular. A 'special event' is a world record attempt at the most authors reading from their work in the same place at the same time. I'm taking along my 'It seemed like a good idea'. Will try and capture our own members on camera. I know we have Judy Bandidt there from the organising committee and a contingent from Brisbane will give us a profile. These events can be inspirational.

Our September meeting is our Annual General Meeting, and so it was that on Tuesday September 14th we met at the Meeting Room at the Brisbane City Council Brisbane Square Library for the Annual General Meeting, Announcement of Winners, Presentation of Certificates, and Presentation on Poetry with Inez, our wonderful Poetry Judge, and some fun with Paper Bookmarks.

A small but enthusiastic group attended the Sunday workshop at the Brisbane City Square Library on July 3rd, to hear Jennifer Beale explain much about editing and proofing. Several members submitted work, and Jennifer gave useful feedback on grammar, and formatting.

We learned a lot about em-dash, and en-dash - and the two hours flew by quickly! So much to learn! So little time!

Waiting, waiting - where is our guest speaker?

There we all were, waiting in the theatrette at the Brisbane City Square Library - not in our usual meeting room, but with all the a/v equipment reading willing and waiting, for our guest, who did not arrive. As it turns out, we had a great meeting as we had various members read their work, and we chatted about our Bribie Island Retreat and the Sunshine Coast Writer's event.

Postscript: We were to learn later, via an apology from Susanna, that she had been marooned down south due to the volcanic ash which disrupted air traffic in Melbourne, Sydney etc. We hope to hear her later in the year.

It was an interesting and rewarding meeting - just not we had planned.

Discussions after the meeting (informally) about blogging raised the issue of getting the blogs of those members who are already working on blogs to be more noticed - there are about 5 or 6 members that we know who have blogs, and we will link to them, but some need updating. If you are a member and have a blog would you write a comment with a link or just put your blog URL.

Even if you are not a blogger, members are welcome to leave a comment.

Postal Editors Meet

One of the great benefits of membership of the SWWQ is the unique postal writer's program. Members who wish to, can join up to two of the postal writers groups where their work is posted to other members of the group for feedback/critique. There are several groups - all with their own name and editor, who is the one that ensures that the writing is sent to all members and returned.

It is a great service for members who cannot attend the monthly meetings in Brisbane on the second Tuesday of each month. One of the postal writers' groups is devoted solely to poetry. When someone becomes a member of SWWQ, they can opt to pay an extra $5 per year, to join up to two of the groups.

There is a Postal Writers Group Coordinator who keeps in touch with and supports the editors.

This week, the very first meeting of the editors was held, giving them an opportunity to communicate face to face with other editors, and share ideas and challenges. It is planned to hold another meeting of editors at the Bribie Island Retreat later in the year.

At the first meeting of the Society for 2011 six Life Members were announced.
These dedicated writers are the first for the Queensland Society and everyone was warm in their acclamation: Marjorie Wilkie, Ellen Ries, Kerry McGinnis, Jan L'estrange, Lennie Wallace and Jill Slack. Two members were on hand to received their certificates from the President, Heather Jacobs, Marjorie Wilkie and Ellen Ries.

Children's Book Appeal

Tess has produced many books which parents and teachers are encouraged to read to children illustrating when it is acceptable for a child to say 'stop that' and 'no'.
